Measuring Progress
To monitor the progress of the grasslands restoration effort, changes in soil carbon, water infiltration, and the wildlife response to this grassland restoration effort will be measured using the latest industry standard practices. Carbon measurement tools will be explored and tested to continuously evolve best practices.
Progress Updates
*as of March 2022
We are currently working on three projects that will restore approximately 2,266 acres in the Northern Great Plains.
The first project is in South Dakota in partnership with the Castle Rock Water Corporation, a multi-family collaborative group. The reseeding occurred in Spring 2021, and baseline monitoring has already occurred.
The second two projects are in Montana in partnership with the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance, a rancher-led collaborative conservation group. The baseline monitoring took place in September 2020, and reseeding took place in October and November 2021.
WWF continues to have ongoing conversations with partners to line up other projects for reseeding in spring 2022, including local NRCS offices, conservation districts, the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture, other landowner led groups, and other conservation NGOs, with six projects in the works for this spring.
Through this project, Burger King, Cargill, and World Wildlife Fund aim to restore nearly 8,000 acres of the Northern Great Plains, support ranching communities and wildlife, and potentially mitigate the effects of climate change.
